The TIG torch is the tool that guides the tungsten electrode and delivers the shielding gas as close as possible to the weld pool. As the central element of the process, the TIG welding torch determines comfort, precision and weld bead quality. The TIG torch holds the tungsten electrode, delivers the current and diffuses argon around the arc. Its design directly influences arc stability and access to difficult areas. A well-equipped TIG welding torch, with the right ceramic nozzle and the right collet, ensures effective gas shielding and a clean weld bead.
This is the primary selection criterion. The air-cooled torch is suitable for moderate amperages and everyday work: simple and economical. The water-cooled TIG torch is essential for high amperages and prolonged welding: the water circuit dissipates heat and prevents overheating, at the cost of a cooling unit. The choice depends on your working amperage and the duration of the weld beads.
The TIG welding torch comprises several wear parts: the ceramic nozzle (which channels the gas), the collet and collet body (which hold the electrode), the back cap and the diffuser. These consumables are chosen based on the electrode diameter and the type of work. TIG torch accessories in good condition are essential for proper gas shielding.
The TIG Lift torch allows arc initiation by contact: the electrode is placed on the workpiece and then lifted to create the arc. It is a simple method, available on many MMA machines equipped with a TIG Lift function. It differs from HF (high frequency) non-contact arc initiation found on dedicated TIG machines. TIG Lift is practical for occasional TIG use.
The professional TIG torch is also chosen for its ergonomics: weight, hose flexibility, cable length and trigger type. For fine and prolonged work, a light and manoeuvrable torch reduces fatigue and improves precision. A progressive trigger or the use of a foot pedal allows energy to be adjusted during welding.
